On March 24, 2022, Omutsu Johokyoku (Adult Diaper Information Center Japan) welcomed Masahiro Taniguchi (谷口昌宏), director of the Housing and Care Research Institute, for a special online event on “Adapting Home Environments for Comfortable Living.”

With experience as a physical therapist and senior care manager, Mr. Taniguchi works to adapt home environments to support the lives of users and caregivers through assistive product selection and use, home modifications and related approaches.

The event addressed the home environment as a whole, rather than focusing only on toilets. From a physical therapist’s perspective, he explained how to use assistive products and home modifications after considering physical condition, daily movements and methods of assistance.

Supporting toileting also requires considering the surrounding environment, including getting to the toilet, standing and sitting, and the space needed to assist. Through Mr. Taniguchi’s talk, we learned the importance of arranging the environment with the whole of daily life in mind, beyond diapers or toilets alone.

Thank you to Mr. Taniguchi and everyone who attended.
